A distinct national competition

ASDWA dates the first event to 1990 in Deloraine, Tasmania, and says the Supreme Australian Championship name was adopted in 1992. Those are useful series-history anchors. They should not be used to merge the Supreme with every earlier Australian event described as national or supreme. Preserve the official series identity and identify an annual edition by its own host, venue and results rather than by a shortened promotional headline.

The program and course framework

The association describes a rotating championship and links dedicated Supreme rules. Its overview identifies Open, Improver and Novice sections and a Supreme course adopted in 1998. Read the current rules and edition’s program before assuming the same structure, rounds or eligibility across every year. A permanent series guide explains the context; it should send competitors to the selected edition for actual nominations, class conditions and practical arrangements.

Separate connected competitions

The Ted Gaby Interstate Challenge is connected to the Supreme program but has its own interstate and selection significance. A dog appearing in that challenge should not automatically receive a Supreme Open placing. Store individual class results, state-team results and subsequent national selection as different claims. The shared venue or program does not make the underlying competitions interchangeable, and a team announcement is not the same as an individual winning score.

Read historical coverage honestly

ASDWA provides previous-winner information alongside related resources. A winner list may establish the stated champion and judges while leaving the full entry list and intermediate rounds unknown. Keep those gaps visible when writing a career summary. If the archive marks an edition as not run, preserve that status rather than manufacturing a placeholder winner. For photographs and program pages, verify reuse rights separately from the sporting facts they help substantiate.

Common questions

Is this the same series as the Canberra Nationals?

No. Keep the ASDWA Supreme and Canberra National Sheepdog Trials as distinct series and follow their respective organisers.
