Name the national competition

ISDS lists English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh National trials separately. Preserve that national identity on every edition and result rather than shortening the title to National and losing the country. The label should not be confused with a national championship in Australia, New Zealand or another registry system. For an overseas reader, naming the organising Society and the national trial is the clearest starting point for navigation.

Qualification is a defined process

The Society publishes a National Trial Qualifying Criteria page and directs readers to current-year entry material for possible changes. A local trial appearance does not automatically establish eligibility. Before entering, consult the actual criteria and identify whether a qualifying result belongs to the correct dog and period. A permanent guide should explain that pathway while leaving current deadlines and detailed conditions with the authority’s published documents.

Course and category context

Use the current Rules for Trials to understand the assessment, then read the edition’s schedule for the offered categories and practical arrangements. A singles result and a brace result concern different performances; brace work involves two dogs with a handler. Keep the category visible when recording an achievement. Nursery, novice and open activity at local level should not be treated as interchangeable with a National result simply because the same dog appears in both.

Follow the evidence through time

The Society’s major-event navigation includes current information, past trials and an archive. Use the edition’s own result publication for a placing, while historical collections can provide background and imagery. A live scoreboard may change, so note publication status and later amendments. If a name is abbreviated, retain the original wording and verify identity before linking it to a pedigree or public profile. A gap in the visible archive is a coverage limitation, not proof of non-participation.

Common questions

Does every open-trial placing qualify a dog for a National?

No. Qualification depends on the Society’s current criteria and the relevant entry conditions.
