Begin with access

Find out where you are allowed to stand before selecting focal length. Canon’s sports-and-wildlife guidance describes telephoto lenses as useful for framing subjects from a distance. At a trial or farm, the permitted position and work layout should determine the photographic plan rather than a lens becoming a reason to enter a restricted area.

Define the pictures

A close portrait, a dog-and-handler partnership and a wide view of stock moving through a landscape need different framing. List the essential images and decide which can realistically be made from your agreed position. Consider whether one versatile setup will tell the story better than repeated equipment changes during unpredictable work.

Check practical handling

Assess weight, support, weather conditions and the camera’s compatibility with the actual lens. Read manufacturer guidance for focus, stabilisation and any converter. Do not infer current performance from a review of a similarly named older model. If purchasing expensive equipment, test or hire where practical and confirm the exact product before committing.

Evaluate the result

Review whether the lens lets you show the intended relationship without excessive cropping or distracting backgrounds. Keep the wider context when it matters to understanding the work. A tightly framed dog can be visually strong while omitting the livestock or handler action that explains the moment, so plan complementary photographs rather than treating reach as the only measure of usefulness.
