Plan with the handler

Agree where you can stand, what work will occur and when to stop photographing. Ask about property access, livestock movement and places where equipment could obstruct the team.

Build a meaningful sequence

Capture context, the working relationship and quieter detail as well as action. Keep captions specific about the task rather than labelling every stock photograph a trial.

Prepare publication details

Record dog and handler names, location, date, creator and permitted uses. Copyright and access permission are separate questions; agree both before a commercial shoot.

Before delivery, check that filenames and captions match the correct dog. A spectacular action frame has little archival value if its identity or location is attached to the wrong subject.

Ask which moments are representative of normal work before staging a photograph. If a scene is arranged for the camera, describe it appropriately rather than presenting it as an observed event.

Keep documentary context

Create a brief identifying which details the story needs: the type of stock, handler position, environment and sequence of work. Ask the handler to explain unfamiliar actions before writing captions. Do not infer a command, the dog’s emotional state or a trial outcome solely from one frame. When a photograph is staged, use it as a portrait or illustration with suitable context. Retain a selection showing the ordinary working relationship so the strongest action image does not become an unsupported account of everything that occurred.

Common questions

Can an action frame establish a trial outcome?

No. Source any result claim from the relevant published event record and keep the photograph’s time and context accurate.
