Breed identity and working background

Dogs Australia’s standard links the breed to the Comacchio lowlands and Ravenna marshes, followed by truffle searching in Romagna after drainage altered land use. This is a concrete example of working-dog history responding to economic and environmental change. A library can connect the breed to scent work, rural industry and regional culture without claiming every contemporary Lagotto is employed finding truffles. An individual’s actual searching experience and training should have their own record.

Temperament, build and coat

The standard describes searching aptitude, trainability, attachment and affection. The coat has a woolly texture and tight ring-shaped curls with visible undercoat; facial hair forms brows, whiskers and a beard. It needs maintenance to avoid unwanted felting as hair grows. This is more specific than a general curly-dog description. Ask an experienced keeper or suitable groomer to explain the routine, including cooperative handling and keeping the dog comfortable during ordinary outdoor activity and coat changes.

Living, training and choosing a dog

Ask the breeder about the adult family’s behaviour, daily routines, screening documentation and placement support. If truffle work interests you, find instruction relevant to that target and location rather than assuming any scent game confers occupational competence. For companionship, plan appropriate learning and occupation alongside rest. Avoid choosing solely on a claimed coat advantage: the dog’s temperament, care and environment all need attention. Published work accounts should identify the actual task and whose experience is being reported.
