Start with the actual journey

Identify the airline, route, transfers and proposed mode of carriage before buying a container. Ask the carrier or shipper which requirements apply to that dog and booking. Keep the answer in writing, especially where multiple carriers are involved, rather than relying on a general product description.

Use the current requirements

IATA’s Traveler’s Pet Corner provides dog-and-cat container resources, including its Container Requirement 1 material. Use the current edition and any operator variations. A retailer’s phrase IATA approved should not replace verification: IATA states that it does not approve or endorse individual commercial dog or cat containers.

Check the individual fit

Measure the dog as instructed in the applicable guidance and compare the proposed container’s usable dimensions. Discuss any uncertainty with the responsible carrier or shipper before purchase. Ask about construction, openings, fasteners, food and water arrangements and labels for the actual shipment rather than assuming that size is the only consideration.

Plan familiarisation and handover

Allow time to introduce the container appropriately before travel and consult the veterinarian about the dog’s suitability for the journey. Record the dog’s identity and care contacts with the booking. Reconfirm acceptance if the route, aircraft or dog’s circumstances change. A compliant-looking container is one part of the transport plan and does not establish import eligibility or guarantee the carrier will accept a particular booking.

Common questions

Does IATA approve a particular commercial crate?

IATA states that it does not certify, approve or endorse commercial dog or cat travel containers. Verify the applicable standard and carrier requirements rather than relying on an approval claim.
