Ask about the journey

Request the proposed route, handovers, waiting periods and care arrangements. Clarify who is responsible at each stage and how the provider responds to delay or extreme weather.

Supply the care brief

Explain the dog’s handling needs and provide veterinary contact details. Agree what information accompanies the dog and who can authorise emergency care.

Check destination requirements

For international travel, verify requirements with the destination authority. A transport booking or sales agreement does not replace official import approval.

Ask how you will receive updates and what happens if a connection is missed. Put emergency authorisation and financial responsibility in writing so the provider can act within an agreed plan.

Confirm whether the provider uses subcontractors and how care instructions are passed between them. Identify the final receiving person and obtain a direct contact for the handover, including a plan if arrival is delayed.

Compare the complete quotation

Ask whether the quote includes collection, boarding, airport handling, documentation assistance and final delivery, or only one leg. Clarify which costs may change if the route or timing changes. Obtain the provider’s written contingency arrangements rather than judging only the headline price. If agents or subcontractors are involved, identify who holds the dog at each stage and how instructions travel with it. Keep the carrier’s acceptance requirements and government import requirements separate even when one business assists with both.
