Recognise a change

Cornell’s ear resources explain that itching and inflammation may be associated with allergy as well as secondary infection. Record which ear appears affected, when the change began and whether there was recent swimming, vegetation exposure or a previous episode. A smell or photograph alone does not identify the organism or underlying cause.

Know the assessment question

The veterinary examination considers the ear canal and relevant wider history. Tell the team about products already used and whether treatment appeared to help before. Recurrent episodes should not simply be labelled dirty ears, because repeating the same cleaning routine may leave the underlying problem unaddressed.

Contact promptly for concerning signs

Significant pain, head tilt, altered balance or deterioration needs prompt advice. Do not probe the canal or put an unfamiliar product into a painful ear. Ask the practice how to prepare for the appointment and bring previous records without delaying urgent assessment to complete home cleaning.

Build an appropriate routine

For routine maintenance, obtain instructions suited to this dog and its findings. Clarify whether cleaning is needed, how it relates to prescribed treatment and when reassessment is due. Keep instructions consistent between handlers. Do not use another dog’s ear medication or treat a successful previous course as a diagnosis of every later episode. This guide gives no flushing or medication procedure.

Common questions

Is every itchy ear an infection?

No. Inflammation, allergy and other problems can contribute. Establish the cause before selecting a treatment or repeating an old prescription.
