Ask the breeder to define the label

Working line, field line and show line can be useful conversational shorthand, but they are incomplete purchase information. Ask what traits are selected, what adults actually do and how puppies are matched to homes. Explain whether you want field participation, another sport, companionship or entry to a professional programme. A selection goal can influence a family without making every puppy identical. The important comparison is the particular population, available evidence and support, not a blanket claim that one label is always better.

Separate kinds of achievement

A conformation result concerns the relevant standard and show assessment; a field result or working certificate has its own criteria. The Royal Kennel Club’s Show Gundog Working Certificate explicitly links a show-qualified gundog with evidence of natural working ability under its framework. This is a useful example of why the two kinds of evidence are not interchangeable. It is a UK programme, so its requirements should not be copied automatically into an Australian event or registry context. Check the responsible authority for the actual activity.

Look beyond titles to daily behaviour

A Labrador or spaniel breed standard can explain intended gundog qualities, but it is not a record of the family’s current selection or the individual’s temperament. Ask to observe adults during handling, unfamiliar outings and rest as well as a favourite demonstration. Discuss the amount and kind of occupation a normal week involves. Do not derive a fixed exercise quota or a guaranteed level of calmness from a line label, and do not assume an absent public title means no useful practical experience exists.

Make claims reviewable before deciding

Request the exact result, event, class, awarding organisation and registered dog identifier where a qualification matters. For practical work, ask for attributable references and relevant conditions. Discuss screening documentation, early puppy experience and support if your original goal changes. A formal employment programme should participate in selection before purchase. Choose a family and individual with a realistic training path for your circumstances, keeping aspirations, observed behaviour and documented achievements separate rather than treating a fashionable phrase as a complete assessment.

Common questions

Does show bred mean unable to work, or working bred mean guaranteed worker?

Neither statement follows from the label. Examine family evidence, individual behaviour and the relevant assessment or training pathway.
