At a glanceThe White Swiss Shepherd Dog is a distinct breed. Dogs Australia records its Swiss development from white shepherd dogs imported from North America.WORKING DOG reference library · Added 2026-10-19 · Editorial guideBreed identity and working backgroundThe standard’s history describes white shepherd dogs arriving in Switzerland in the early 1970s and registration as a new breed in the Swiss studbook appendix from 1991. It identifies the American-born Lobo in that history. This is more precise than treating every white shepherd-shaped dog as the same breed. Use registration and ancestry to establish identity, preserving uncertain descriptions where documentary evidence is unavailable.Temperament, build and coatDogs Australia describes a lively, balanced, attentive dog with good learning ability and devotion to its owner. Medium-length and long coats are described, both dense and double with protective outer hair and abundant undercoat. The long coat has more visible neck, leg and tail furnishing, but excessive length is not the aim. Ask the breeder to demonstrate care for the actual coat variety and discuss the behaviour of adult relatives.Living, training and choosing a dogA shepherd background and a white coat do not confer an operational, assistance or security qualification. If a specialised role is intended, involve the responsible programme in selection. For companionship or sport, talk through your household routine, experience and access to instruction. Ask about early social experience, screening records and breeder support. An ordinary visit with adults can provide valuable evidence about handling and settling that a dramatic performance clip does not show.Sources & further readingReferences for this guide.
