Understanding the activity

Walk-throughs and signs help handlers understand the sequence. Read the current class rules for communication and permitted assistance rather than borrowing obedience assumptions.

Before attending or entering

Read the host’s schedule alongside the governing rulebook. Confirm the venue, entry deadline, registration requirements and whether spectators or non-competing dogs are permitted. Ask the trial secretary about anything the schedule leaves unclear.

Reading the record

Store the level and authority with the result. Similar class names in separate organisations may have different qualification requirements.

Use the course as a map

Note the exercise at which the team became uncertain rather than describing the whole run as unsuccessful. Discuss the sign, handler route and dog’s response with an instructor. The official rules determine a scoring fault, while a training review can focus on making that one transition clearer.

Numbered stations and progression

Dogs Australia describes a course of numbered signs, with the dog and handler completing the displayed exercises in sequence. Its overview names Novice, Advanced, Excellent and Master, with on-lead work at entry level and off-lead work in higher levels. Confirm the current rules for the exact class rather than borrowing a permitted interaction from another level. The handler’s preliminary walk-through helps identify the route. A spectator explanation can point out this planning stage, which is easily missed if only the dog’s scored round is filmed.
