Understanding the activity

Ask an experienced club to explain harness fitting, control and progression. A breed’s historical draft role does not make improvised load pulling suitable.

Before attending or entering

Read the host’s schedule alongside the governing rulebook. Confirm the venue, entry deadline, registration requirements and whether spectators or non-competing dogs are permitted. Ask the trial secretary about anything the schedule leaves unclear.

Reading the record

Identify the exact test and organising authority. Keep a judged test result separate from a historical claim about a breed.

Check equipment and manoeuvring

Before thinking about load, ask a club to demonstrate how a team waits, turns and moves through restricted spaces with its equipment. Handling and willingness are part of the task. A historical breed description cannot establish that an individual dog is physically ready for a loaded test.

Control before freight

Dogs Australia describes exercises involving changes of pace, distractions, backing and manoeuvring as well as a freight haul. Its overview distinguishes Novice and Open draft work and describes veterinary oversight at tests. Use the current rulebook for equipment, load and eligibility decisions rather than treating a website summary as a personal prescription. A dog’s individual readiness should be assessed before pulling work. On a result page, retain the level and test date so a reader can distinguish a formal pass from attendance at a training demonstration.
