At a glancePuppy socialisation develops positive, manageable experiences with the world. It includes people, animals, surfaces, sounds and everyday handling rather than a target number of greetings.WORKING DOG reference library · Added 2026-10-19 · Editorial guideMore than meeting dogsA working-breed puppy may later encounter gates, vehicles, equipment and busy venues as well as livestock. Socialisation should prepare for everyday life, not only a future job. The RSPCA emphasises positive experiences and the ability to move away, rather than forcing a puppy to remain near something frightening.Plan small experiencesList situations relevant to your actual home and likely routine, then discuss a safe introduction plan with your veterinarian and reward-based instructor. Introduce manageable changes instead of combining noise, unfamiliar dogs and a new surface in one overwhelming outing. Health and infection-risk advice should come from your veterinarian for the puppy and local circumstances.Observe the responseRecord what the puppy comfortably noticed or explored, not merely what was presented. Standing near machinery while frightened is not automatically a successful learning experience. If concern develops, increase distance or end the exposure and ask an instructor how to make the next attempt easier.Keep future work separateEarly familiarisation does not authorise free access to livestock, moving machinery or working areas. A supervised stock introduction has its own requirements. A useful socialisation log describes the environment, the puppy’s response and a next step without labelling one cautious reaction as a permanent temperament fault.Sources & further readingReferences for this guide.
