Course completion and certification: checking a trainer’s claim

Read the issuer’s distinction

Karen Pryor Academy’s behaviour-consulting handbook explicitly distinguishes coursework from optional certification assessment. This is one concrete example, not a rule for every educational provider. A directory should preserve the credential the person actually holds and check the relevant issuer’s current explanation. A familiar acronym without its awarding organisation is difficult for a reader to assess.

A listing example

Imagine a trainer saying they attended a seminar, completed a program and obtained certification. These may be three different records, each with its own evidence. Ask for the exact name, date and public verification route where available. Do not publish private transcripts or infer a licence to practise veterinary medicine from a dog-training education badge.

Choose support for the actual task

A confirmed credential does not automatically cover every specialist field, such as livestock instruction, complex behaviour consulting or clinical care. Ask about relevant experience, methods and referral boundaries. A public profile can accurately describe education and demonstrated services without guaranteeing outcomes, exaggerating professional scope or presenting course attendance as an independently assessed qualification.
