Explore the trial network

The New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association provides a national starting point for its trial network. Use its resources to identify the responsible centre or club, then ask that organiser about current dates, classes and participation. Do not assume an Australian event format uses identical terminology or rules.

Read records in their own context

Preserve the original event title, class, dog and handler names and source when comparing results. A similar class label in another country does not establish equivalence; compare the rules before drawing performance conclusions.

Plan a dog’s journey

Consult MPI’s current dog-import resources early if a dog is travelling to New Zealand. Confirm the applicable process before booking transport or committing to a working placement. Club membership and trial entry are separate from biosecurity requirements.

When comparing a dog’s records across countries, retain the registry authority with each identifier. A number or abbreviated name should not be assumed unique across independent systems.

Read local trial terminology

Te Ara’s farm-dog resources provide historical context for New Zealand sheepdog trialling, while NZSDTA publishes current national trial-date resources. Use the historical overview to understand the tradition and the responsible association or club for current participation. Preserve the exact event and class names before comparing with Australian records. If a competition has several events or classes, record them separately instead of attaching one general sheepdog result to the whole meeting. A historical explanation and a current entry notice should remain different source types.
