Find sheepdog-trial evidence

ISDS includes the English National in its major-trial programme. Use that named series and its actual edition when cataloguing records, while retaining the local organiser and venue for each year. A national event, a local trial and an individual qualifying result are distinct objects. Do not infer a dog’s full history from one national entry or a similarly named handler.

Explore gundog resources separately

The Royal Kennel Club’s field-trial resources provide information about working gundogs, tests and related activities. A field trial and a gundog working test need their exact programme retained; neither is automatically a livestock trial. Use the appropriate rules and organiser when comparing results instead of placing every record under a generic working-dog score.

Use welfare and countryside guidance

GOV.UK provides a dog-welfare code and the Countryside Code. These are useful official starting points for care and visitor conduct, but an event invitation does not automatically authorise unrelated training or access to livestock. Check the guidance applicable to the actual activity and land. This guide does not summarise penalties or assume that an English resource answers a Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish legal question.

Keep geography and authority separate

A dog may be registered through one authority, live in England and compete across several regions. Record each fact with its own source rather than assigning all records to the venue’s country. For a practical visit, confirm dates, entry and spectator arrangements directly. For historic research, retain rule versions and source names as published, including later institutional name changes, so an English-language summary remains traceable to the original record.

Use the source’s institutional name as published when preserving a historic citation.

Common questions

Should every event in the United Kingdom be labelled English?

No. Record the actual venue geography and the relevant sporting region separately, using the original event title.
