Kennel gates and handover areas: a purchasing brief

Questions for evaluating kennel gates, catches, maintenance and the complete transfer route between dogs, people and vehicles.

At a glance

Evaluate gates as part of the complete dog-transfer route, including people, vehicles and equipment; a secure panel alone does not describe the whole containment arrangement.

Containment is a whole-site question

Victoria’s boarding-establishment code addresses an external perimeter fence intended to prevent escape. The code’s boarding scope matters; it is not a substitute for checking the requirements of another facility type or jurisdiction. For a purchasing brief, use that whole-site perspective to describe how dogs move between vehicles, accommodation and people rather than comparing gate panels in isolation.

Draw ordinary and unusual movements

Map the route used by a handler bringing one dog, a visitor arriving with another and a person moving cleaning equipment. Include the places where doors or gates must open during these tasks. The point is to expose conflicting movements before construction. Ask the designer how the proposed layout will work when a gate is being repaired or an area is temporarily unavailable.

Ask practical hardware questions

Request clear descriptions of hinges, catches, closing direction, mounting points and replacement parts. Ask for a demonstration using the actual operating procedure and discuss how staff will identify incomplete closure. Compare access needs for people carrying bowls or leads with the containment objective. Do not describe a latch or gate as escape-proof simply because a supplier uses a strong material or a reassuring product name.

Include inspection and handover

Record the delivered gate positions and hardware against the agreed drawing, and make any defects visible in the project handover. Keep maintenance instructions where the responsible people can find them. Changes to access routes deserve review rather than ad hoc removal of barriers. This is a planning and purchasing guide, not a specified fence height, certified containment design or promise that a facility meets local obligations.

Common questions

Should gates be compared separately from the transfer route?

Compare both. The layout needs to account for people, vehicles, other dogs, maintenance and equipment movements.
