Use the official pathway

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry publishes the Australian cat and dog import guidance. Use it to establish which pathway applies; this page is not a substitute for an import checklist.

Build a document plan

Keep identity, veterinary and transport documents organised and ask the authority about any unclear condition. Record which version of the guidance you used and check again before committing to travel.

Keep work history separate

Pedigree and working ability do not establish import eligibility. Evaluate the dog’s suitability and the biosecurity process as separate decisions.

If buying a dog overseas, make responsibility for export preparation, transport and import documentation explicit in the transaction. Obtain professional clarification when a requirement cannot be met rather than assuming an exception will be available.

Store approvals and supporting documents in an ordered folder. Ask which originals must travel with the dog rather than assuming a phone photograph will meet every requirement.

Build the plan backwards

Use the official import pathway to identify dependencies before proposing a departure date. Some steps may need completion before others can proceed, and an incomplete record can affect the whole journey. Ask the relevant authority or competent professional how those dependencies apply to this dog’s origin and history. Keep copies and dates in an ordered record. Do not advertise a dog as ready for import simply because a seller has obtained a pedigree or transport quote; those documents support different parts of the transaction.

Common questions

Does an overseas pedigree establish Australian import eligibility?

No. Pedigree, suitability for work, transport acceptance and official biosecurity requirements are separate matters.
