Victorian Sambar hounds: hunter testing and dog registration

The separate Victorian systems for the hunter’s hound endorsement and the individual dog’s assessment, registration or authorisation.

At a glance

Victoria requires a Game Licence authorising hounds for Sambar hunting and a separate GMA registration or authorisation for the hounds used. The Hound Hunting Test assesses the hunter’s knowledge; it is not a working trial for the dog.

The test concerns the hunter

GMA’s Hound Hunting Test is part of the pathway to a Game Licence that authorises Sambar Deer hunting with hounds. It covers knowledge of licensing, permitted methods, ethical responsibilities and related requirements. The current official page provides the online route through MyGL and describes particular supervised exceptions. This is an administrative knowledge assessment for a person, distinct from a hunt test that judges a dog’s field work. A directory or event report should therefore identify whether it concerns a hunter completing the Hound Hunting Test or a dog attending an official registration assessment.

The dog has a separate registration pathway

GMA describes assessment of mature hounds against approved breed standards and prescribed height requirements before recommendation for registration. Dogs under twelve months follow an authorisation pathway because their adult characteristics cannot yet be assessed in the same way. The authority also provides an ownership-transfer process for registered hounds. These records are different from a pedigree registry and from local council dog registration. Each answers a separate question about ancestry, statutory ownership administration or authorised use. Keeping the records together is useful, but one document should not be assumed to replace the others.

Current breed provisions deserve a current check

The GMA page records a March 2026 regulatory amendment concerning registered Black and Tan and Bluetick Coonhounds. It also retains other material on approved hounds, registration and training-age authorisations. That update makes an older booklet an incomplete source for the current breed position. Use the current amendment information, relevant regulations and GMA confirmation where a dog’s eligibility is uncertain. The official page lists registration assessment opportunities, but dates and venues are event information that should be checked when booking. Registration still sits alongside the hunter’s licence, the permitted Sambar area, season and land access; it is not permission for unrestricted hunting elsewhere.

Common questions

Is the Hound Hunting Test a field test of my dog?

No. It assesses the hunter’s knowledge; the hound’s physical assessment and registration are separate.
