The national association and local clubs

The New Zealand Gundog Trial Association forms part of the national kennel-club structure described by Dogs New Zealand. Its stated objects include promoting and regulating gundog trials, encouraging championship trials, allocating championships and making the rules needed for that work. Dogs New Zealand also identifies affiliated gundog clubs as the local organisations conducting club and championship trials. A prospective handler therefore has two useful levels of contact: NZGTA for national rules and the affiliated-club directory for the community that organises local participation. The distinction explains why a national calendar contains activities run by many different clubs.

Several formats share a national structure

The association’s website separates retriever pigeon trials, retriever natural-game work, pointer and setter trials, spaniel natural-game trials and simulated spaniel activity. Its championship schedules and results should be read within those formats. A result in one is a record of that particular task, rather than an interchangeable general gundog title. The national resources also include probationary and approved judges and information for club secretaries. Those administrative records help identify how a published trial fits the system: the organising club, approved schedule, format, judges and reported result all contribute different pieces of evidence.

Training and recorded achievement

NZGTA additionally publishes a graded training scheme and maintains achievement-title and championship-title resources. This allows readers to explore structured learning as well as competitive records. The 2026 AGM information illustrates a further distinction: club members wishing to participate in national nominations or voting were directed to their club secretary for an NZGTA membership form if they were not already national members. Local club involvement and national association membership consequently need to be checked separately. For a newcomer, the affiliated-club list and graded-scheme information provide concrete starting points; for a researcher, the dated results and title lists preserve the sporting record.

Common questions

Does joining a local club necessarily settle NZGTA membership?

The 2026 AGM notice treats them separately and directs club members who need NZGTA membership to their club secretary.
