Publication and stud book are related institutions

American Field and the Field Dog Stud Book have a shared history in North American bird-dog sport, but serve different record functions. American Field publishes reports and information from the field-trial community; the stud book records registration and ancestry. The current registration resource traces pedigree records to 1874 and describes their long association with the American Field Publishing Company. This distinction is useful when a dog appears in a report: a narrative of its performance and a certified pedigree may refer to the same animal, yet each document establishes a different part of the record.

The UKC transition has dated milestones

UKC acquired the Field Dog Stud Book and American Field Publishing Company in September 2021. Its published transition material records a further milestone on 1 January 2024, when the registry systems moved forward as one stud book with dual privileges for eligible FDSB registrations. The 2024 explanation also identifies that only selected breeds receive documents bearing the FDSB mark. These dates and eligibility distinctions help interpret older certificates and newer applications. Readers should follow the current registration links for an application, retaining the historical name and number when describing an existing document.

Using pedigree and sporting records together

The official registration page separates registering an individual dog, enrolling a litter and obtaining pedigree services. UKC Field publications provide event reports and additional information about the institutional transition. For a researcher, the productive combination is the pedigree identity, a dated event report and any official win record belonging to that occasion. A publication’s narrative can explain the conditions and dog work while the registration document supplies lineage and identification. Neither should silently replace the other. The same care applies across the transition: an older FDSB reference should remain recognisable even when its current administrative service is reached through UKC.

Common questions

Are a field-trial report and a certified pedigree interchangeable?

No. The report concerns sporting activity; the pedigree records registration identity and ancestry.
