Understand the controls

Canon’s exposure-triangle explanation covers the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. For a working dog, those choices also affect motion and depth of field. Decide which visual details matter first, then review the exposure rather than choosing a setting solely because the dog is black, white or mixed.

Read the light

A dark dog against a bright field and the same dog in shade are different scenes. Check the preview and the camera’s available highlight or histogram tools, using the manual to interpret them. Include pale markings, sky and reflective equipment when checking which important areas are losing detail.

Protect the story

A photograph can include deep shadows without making the subject unreadable, but important identification details may still need attention. Review the dog’s eyes and markings along with the wider working context. If lighting changes as the dog moves, recheck instead of assuming the opening exposure remains suitable throughout a run.

Keep processing credible

Use editing to present the recorded scene clearly and retain an original master. Avoid processing that changes identifying markings or obscures relevant equipment when the image is used as a documentary record. Caption unusual conditions where useful. A stylised artwork can use a different approach, but should not be presented as an unaltered evidence photograph.
