Questions about accommodation in a station job

Clarify accommodation, meals, deductions, dog access and practical relocation arrangements before accepting a remote role.

At a glance

Treat station accommodation as a specific written arrangement: describe what is provided, its relationship to employment and any proposed charges rather than assuming a job advertisement’s package wording settles everything.

Key facts

Official source distinction
Accommodation provision and lawful pay deductions need separate checking [source]

Separate the room from the pay question

Fair Work publishes guidance about deducting pay and a separate resource concerning board and lodging in awards. Those sources show why an employer-provided bed or meals should not be converted into an assumed deduction without checking the actual applicable framework. A written description of accommodation helps both parties understand the offer, but wording alone does not establish that a deduction is lawful.

Ask what is actually provided

Clarify whether the space is private or shared, what facilities are included and which items the worker must bring. Discuss meals, utilities, communication access and transport arrangements where relevant. Identify who handles repairs and how concerns are reported. These practical questions should be answered before relocation rather than discovered after a worker has travelled a long distance and has limited alternatives.

Make dog and visitor arrangements explicit

Permission for the employee to live on the property does not automatically include permission to house personal or working dogs. Record the approved animals, accommodation location and agreed care arrangements separately. Clarify visitor policies and any limits relevant to the actual accommodation. Keep the employer-required use of a worker-owned dog distinct from general permission to bring an animal for companionship.

Plan changes and departure

Ask what happens to accommodation if duties, roster or employment circumstances change and where the written terms are kept. Use appropriate jurisdiction-specific advice for tenancy or other legal questions rather than assuming every station room has one identical status. Retain the offer, relevant payment information and agreed practical arrangements. A clear record allows the parties to compare the accommodation actually supplied with the arrangement discussed before travel.

Common questions

Does permission to live on the property automatically include my dogs?

Agree the actual dog accommodation and work arrangements explicitly before bringing animals to the property.
