Bring existing records

Take the vaccination certificate rather than relying on memory or colour labels. Include puppy records and any adverse reactions so the practice can interpret the history.

Discuss exposure

RSPCA distinguishes core vaccination from vaccines selected according to individual risk. Tell the vet about boarding, travel and contact with dogs at events.

Confirm next steps

Ask which vaccine is proposed, why, and when the next review is due. Separately check event or boarding documentation requirements; an organiser’s entry condition is not a complete medical plan.

If records are incomplete, tell the veterinarian which information is missing and where previous care occurred. Do not fill gaps by assuming that all dogs from one litter received identical care.

If proof is needed for an event, request a clear copy from the treating practice. Keep the dog’s identity attached to the certificate during travel and entry.

Core and risk-based protection

WSAVA’s 2024 vaccination guidance distinguishes core vaccination from decisions that depend on lifestyle and local disease circumstances. In Australia, RSPCA identifies distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus among core canine protection. The relevant schedule also depends on the product and previous history, which is why this guide does not give a universal interval. Exposure questions include travel, boarding and contact with unfamiliar dogs. Keep those factors separate from the certificate an organiser requests: an administrative entry check and the dog’s medical needs overlap but are not the same assessment.

Common questions

Does every dog need an identical vaccination plan?

No. Core protection and risk-based decisions need to be interpreted through the dog’s history, location, exposure and the relevant vaccine product.
