A statement for the American Belgian Sheepdog category

The Belgian Sheepdog Club of America publishes guidance for the American category corresponding to the Groenendael name familiar in the Australian four-variety Belgian Shepherd framework. Its statement lists OFA hip and elbow evaluation and an eye examination by a board-certified ophthalmologist, with results recorded through CERF or OFA. Identify the source category when comparing documents. A recommendation from one American parent club is not automatically evidence of a rule for every Belgian variety, nor does the common shepherd background make an individual dog’s screening results transferable to a relative.

Tests and family questions are deliberately separated

BSCA also recommends discussing epilepsy, thyroid problems, cancer including gastric cancer and hemangiosarcoma, and temperament. The club is therefore not claiming that its joint and eye screens detect every concern relevant to the breed. A file containing three reports may be complete for that published list while still requiring an honest discussion about health in relatives and previous offspring. That history is information supplied by the family and breeder; it should not be repackaged as a laboratory clearance or a disease prevalence estimate.

Read the actual eye report and its date

OFA’s CAER information explains that eye certification is based on observable clinical appearance, is valid for twelve months and is distinct from comprehensive ocular diagnosis. A passing certificate can also contain breeder-option findings. The complete report is therefore more informative than a cropped normal label. Keep the examiner, date and any recorded findings available to the treating veterinarian. The same principle applies to the joint reports: their identity and result matter more than a generic health-tested badge. Used this way, the BSCA statement provides a clear route into source records without guaranteeing a dog’s future health or replacing veterinary assessment.

Common questions

Does the listed screening package test for every cancer mentioned by BSCA?

No. The statement separates its screening list from additional family-history discussion topics.
